The School of Education welcomes potential visiting scholars, including graduate students, who are interested in working with faculty members in our department. The below information describes the SOE’s procedures for reviewing applications from potential visiting scholars.
Please note that potential visiting scholars require a faculty sponsor in the School of Education. This faculty member will submit the application on the potential scholar’s behalf.
Approval Process
- The faculty sponsor contacts the chair of the Promotion, Tenure, and Appointments (PTA) Committee to communicate his or her intention to propose a visiting scholar.
- The faculty sponsor completes the below application form on behalf of the scholar and submits it to the Welfare Committee for initial review. Please note that this application form is due by September 1 for intended arrival the following Spring or by February 1 for intended arrival the following Fall.
- The PTA Committee reviews the application and requests input from program area faculty, if needed. The Committee should consider the visiting scholar’s contribution to the field and their potential contribution to the SOE and university.
- The PTA Committee votes whether to approve the scholar. If approved, the PTA Chair(s) should contact the faculty sponsor and advise the faculty sponsor to continue the process with CEHD HR and the Office of International Students and Scholars (if necessary). The PTA Chair should also alert the SOE Director, Senior Associate Director, and business administrator that the visiting scholar has been approved by the faculty.
- If the applicant is an international scholar, the faculty sponsor and scholar should complete the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) visiting scholar approval process. Please note that completed documents are due to OISS six weeks before the scholar’s arrival.
Teaching and Instructional Resources
If your classroom does not suit your needs (e.g., not enough space or chairs), contact Jo Ann Merritt, Administrative Assistant. If your classroom is locked after 5:00 pm, call Public Safety at 302-831-2222.
Instructors can use Canvas as their online learning management system. Course sessions in certain classrooms can be recorded through UD Capture.
Please visit the SOE office in 113 Willard Hall or email Kristyn Hatfield for copy requests. Copies should be requested at least two business days prior to when they are needed.
Before requesting any copies, please review the University of Delaware Policy for Copyright and Fair Use In Instruction and/or have copyright authorization for any reproduction request that is copyrighted material.
Students complete online course evaluations and instructors can access the results online. Jo Ann Merritt sends three reminders to students to complete the evaluation: a few days prior to the start, the first day and the last day of the participation window.
If a student requests permission into your course, first ask Jo Ann Merritt about the room capacity to ensure that there are enough seats in the classroom. If the classroom can accommodate the additional student and you would like to permit the student into your course, then email Jo Ann with your permission and the student’s name and ID number.
When communicating via email, we encourage you to send emails from your UD account and to use your students’ UD email addresses. You can communicate with your entire class via Canvas, PO Box and send several attachments to students via the UD Dropbox.
If you need a room for a final exam during finals week for an upcoming course, please contact Jo Ann Merritt when the course is being scheduled. The time and location of your final exam is available here.
Instructors should see Kristyn Hatfield in 113 Willard Hall to obtain mailroom and office keys. PhD students and student employees may also request keys to the offices they are working in. A deposit of $20 cash is required for any student needing a key to an office .
The mailroom at 130 Willard is locked. You will need the mailroom key to enter it.
Supplies are located in the mailroom (130 Willard Hall). Please inform Kristyn Hatfield at khat@udel.edu if inventory of supplies you take is running low. Please contact the SOE office to order additional supplies.
The School of Education asks instructors to submit an electronic copy of their syllabi each semester for the department’s records. Please submit syllabi to the SOE main office at the beginning of each semester for each course.
To initiate an Independent Study course, students should complete the Special Problem/Independent Study Form with their instructor. The signed form should be emailed to Kristyn Hatfield (khat@udel.edu) for director approval.
